GPS/GSM tracer : The company Datacount has asked EmDev to develop a small waterproof GPS tracking device that can function for at least 2 weeks on a set of charged batteries. In addition, a GPS sample rate of at least 1 measurement per second is required and a temperature range of -10 to 50 degrees, which eliminates the need for Li-Ion batteries. Furthermore, the box must regularly send a status update by GSM via a GPRS connection. Thanks to a smart choice of batteries, antennas, microcontroller and GPS module, all these wishes are met.

Etulipa : Etulipa – a highly innovative company located in Eindhoven – brings a new technology to the market: bright reflective color displays. www.etulipa.com

Together with Whitebream in Oud-Beijerland, EmDev has developed part of the software for a demo controller in which BMP files are read, converted and sent via a fast serial protocol to the individual drivers of the tiles or ’tiles’ of the Etulipa display.

Outdoor camera : This camera module has been specially developed for the company DataCount in Bodegraven for monitoring traffic situations. After recharging the batteries, the camera can film three days in a row. It is also possible to film only on pre-set days/hours. During commissioning, the image can be made visible on a smart-phone or terminal via a WiFi connection.

A retro nixie clock : Basically a hobby project, as no customer is interested in a nixie clock. Because I once built tube amplifiers (ECC82, EL84, EL34…) that old-fashioned technique continues to fascinate me.

The nixie clock pictured below is a wild mix of the old tube and the new microcontroller. The design meets the following conditions:

  • Eats energy.
  • Will almost certainly not pass the EMC approval.
